So How Do I Do This Whole Natural Living Thing? Part 2

Hey there my Friends!

I am sitting on my front porch in a rocking chair listening to the rain pouring out of the gutters and NF (if you haven’t heard of him he is an extremely talented Christian rapper, I highly suggest you head over to Spotify and give him a listen!)

Alright let’s get down to business. I want to share some more easy products you can replace with all natural, pure, plant-based products from Young Living. Again, as in the first part, this post will be largely educational content from one of the founders of my team of Young Living ladies. All kudos to Emily Anderson.

So laundry soap, pretty straight forward right? It’s helpful and keeps your clothes clean, fresh and smelling nice. What about dryer sheets, those little smelly squares that make your clothes smell pretty good, no matter how long you accidentally leave them in the dryer while they are still damp. NO!

Here is what I have learned about these products:

Laundry soap

“The average family washes approximately 80 pounds of laundry per week—or 35 billion loads of laundry per year!

This means that 17.5 billion cups of laundry detergent are being used every year in the U.S. alone.

Not only can you come in contact with caustic chemicals via your clothing, from having been laundered in them, but you can breathe them into your lungs once they become airborne in the process of doing your laundry.

The detergent you’re using may contain a cocktail of potent cancer-causing chemicals, some of which the manufacturer doesn’t even have to list on the label. This loophole reduces the odds that you’ll ever discover what’s in there.

Four of the worst offenders are:

👉🏼Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)/sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)

👉🏼1,4-dioxane

👉🏼NPE (nonylphenol ethoxylate)

👉🏼Phosphates

Not only are these chemicals potentially damaging to your health, but they are also contaminating waterways and harming the environment.”

👉🏼Take a few minutes and finish reading this article on Dr. Mercola’s website – it’s very eye opening about the dangers of laundry detergent: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/12/21/are-you-slowly-killing-your-family-with-hidden-dioxane-in-your-laundry-detergent.aspx

We’ve been using Thieves Laundry Soap since the moment Young Living released it – and LOVE it!  You can always add a couple drops of Purification or Lemon if you need a little more scent to your laundry.  And for extra dirty loads, I like to add a capful of Thieves Household Cleaner.

Now, how about those dryer sheets & fabric softeners?

“Chemicals used in fabric softener-manufacturing operations cover your clothes with a fine layer of (toxic) lubrication, which can indeed soften fabrics and render them free of static cling. Then, to mask the smell of the chemicals, they add fragrances.

Between the chemicals and the perfumes if only one toxic ingredient were used, it would be reason enough to opt for natural ingredients, especially for something used as often as fabric softener.

Something else to think of, though, is that these chemical substances are not only on your (and your kids’) clothes, but on your sheets and pillowcases, towels and washcloths – EVERYTHING!

The problem here is that, while a product’s ingredient label may list only a handful of ingredients, there may be many others in the product that you don’t know about because manufacturers don’t have to list them – with perfume components at the top of the no-list offenders.”

So, creators of these products DO NOT have to list what’s in them – that’s a tad bit scary, don’t you think?

If you can do one thing today, throw away your dryer sheets and replace them with wool dryer balls.

Your family’s health is worth it!

Lastly, let’s talk about candles and air fresheners. I admit these are my weakness! I love candles! Especially in the winter, just something about that flickering flame and the warm smells that fill my room as the snow falls outside (or the rain or bitter cold in Delaware, I wish we got more snow in the winter here) is comforting. But when I learned about what is actually being released into the air around me when I  burn candles or hang an air freshener in my car, my thoughts about them were altered.

Candles, Air Fresheners

We all love for our house to smell yummy, right?  Unfortunately, using candles, air fresheners, wax warmers, etc. can come at a cost to our health because of the synthetic fragrances.

The National Academy of Sciences points out some vital facts about synthetic fragrances:

👉🏼About 95% of chemicals used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum (crude oil).

👉🏼They include benzene derivatives (carcinogenic), aldehydes, toluene and many other known toxic chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions.

As Dr. Axe states: “Avoiding the dangers of synthetic scents is crucial. It’s something I need you to share with your family and friends. When a company puts “fragrance” on the label, don’t be tricked. This is a catch-all term that actually can stand for thousands of different ingredients (literally, at least 3,000). And when you use a product containing “fragrance” or “parfum,” all of those mysterious ingredients are absorbed right into your bloodstream. These ingredients are predominantly made from chemicals and are just outright toxic for your health in so many ways.” 😳😳😳

🌱🌱🌱

Y’all, these “scents” that we love so much in our homes are doing damage to our bodies and our health.  I’ll be the first to admit that I used to be a “pumpkin-scented” candle junkie 🙋🏼.  Every year, I stocked up on that candle and burned it all year long – I didn’t even know about the damage it could have been causing me or my small children 😳

Did you know that the FDA does not even require fragrance and cosmetic makers to disclose exactly what they are using to scent their products?  If companies are using truly natural ingredients, then why be shy?

Wonder why companies would continue to use synthetic scents if they’re so bad for our health? The answer is straightforward – money.  Synthetic scents can be an extremely cheap way to give everything from shampoo to lotion to candles a desirable scent. Unfortunately, just because you enjoy a scent, doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

There is a better way though!

Get your diffuser and essential oils out!  When you diffuse Young Living oils, you are making your house smell yummy AND you aren’t harming your body with synthetic fragrances.
