My purpose in writing today is to express the heartbreak I feel, that is of a strength that I am convinced can only come from my Father in heaven. As I am surfing through the many social networking sites that exist today I have noticed a very distressing pattern among the young women of my generation. The words slut, whore, ugly, retarded and I am certain many others of this variety, seem to be very common in the vocabulary of young women in my generation. And perhaps the most distressing part of this matter is that these words are almost always used by the author to refer to herself.
The questions that always echo in my mind and reverberate in my soul when I see my fellow women posting these things about themselves until I am almost sick are: do we really believe these things about ourselves?, and why do believe the lies we are told by this world? And yes I say WE, I am not pretending to be above anyone in writing this. I, too, fall victim to the lies I hear sometimes, and I know that every woman struggles at at least one point in their lives to believe that they are more than what this world suggests they are.
BUT may I suggest a change in perspective for us all?
Yes, I am suggesting that it is not entirely the fault of the world that we believe such heinous lies about ourselves, but also our own fault in having chosen to view ourselves according to this perspective the world has of us, namely, that we are sluts, whores, invaluable pieces of flesh that may only be pleasing to ourselves and to our peers if we are to give ourselves completely away to the people of this world both physically and emotionally, and that this perspective is completely normal and even okay to have. Instead of viewing ourselves according to the truth: that we are valuable creations, made for a purpose in this world and not to be taken advantage of for the mere pleasure of others. That our identity is to be found in and built upon the only perfect Love and then reinforced by a love we may find here, not to be taken from us by what we think is love but in all actuality is just lust.
For much too long we have chosen to believe scandalous lies and falsehoods about ourselves. My heart breaks as TV show after TV show, and commercial after commercial only reinforces the obsession with sex, lust, money as our only means of happiness, when really all they bring is more longing, more hurt.
My friends, my sisters, you are right to be in search of joy and happiness. It is a natural desire of the heart, put there by our heavenly Father, so that He might fill that desire for us and be glorified. But I am afraid we have missed the mark terribly, and instead of running straight into the arms of our Father, the only One who can truly make us whole, we have run to the world and let it make us believe the lies we now define ourselves by: “I must seek every pleasure I possibly can, then I won’t feel so unloved, so alone, so empty anymore”, “I need a man in my life at all times, then I will feel loved, valuable, beautiful”, and so on.
Come back to the truth of what the Lord made you to be! That longing that you feel within you, that you have never been able to fulfill in the many temporary pursuits you have chased, is a remnant of who you were before we chose sin over God in Eden all those thousands of years ago. And it is your Father in heaven calling you back to Him with open arms stretched as far as the east is to the west, waiting for you to come home.
You have value. You were created in the same image as the God who, with one breath, spoke the wonders of the mountains and the beauty of stars and all the Cosmos into existence.
“So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him,
male and female he created them.
And God blessed them.”
“And God saw everything that he had made, and behold
it was very good.”
You are loved, beyond any love you could ever experience here.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.
In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he love us and sent his Son to [take the punishment] for our sins.
~1 John 4:10
You are beautiful. Do not shrink back at the world’s idea of what is beautiful and what is not, for what do they know? What is truly beautiful about you is your spirit, if it is gentle and kind and quiet.
It is not fancy hair, gold jewelry, or fine clothes that make you beautiful. NO! Your beauty should come from within you— the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit that will never be destroyed and is very precious to God.
~1 Peter 3:3-4
You can be made new and rest.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
~2 Corinthians 5:17
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
Go in peace now my sisters, my fellow young women. Know that you do not need to remain a prisoner of this world and it’s lies which you have chosen to believe, but that YOU CAN BE FREE!!
